Volterra

Volterra was established before 8 B.C!  Talk about history! This walled city is located in the Tuscany hills and has amazing views, Roman ruins and an awesome plaza with a bell tower.  It also has an Etruscan museum (early         inhabitants) that has an incredible collection.

The walled city has 2 ancient arches.   These are over 16 feet wide and has an amazing story.  During WWII, the Nazis were occupying the town and when the Allied forces grew near, the Nazis were planning on   blowing up these arches to delay the Allies.   Well, the town held these   arches so dear, they convinced the Nazis to give them 24 hours to block the arches.   The Nazis agreed and the townsfolk worked the entire day and nights to block these arches.   Grandparents, children, women and everyone who was left in the villages helped.   They succeeded in blocking the arches and prevented them from being       destroyed!   There is a bronze plaque commemorating this astonishing feat.

This town has also served as a backdrop to the Twilight movies and the Medici TV series.    Make sure you climb the bell tower when you visit!  It's worth the climb for the view!

The group gathered together for an amazing dinner at a local Trattoria "La Carabaccia"  This was one of the       highlights of the tour!  The tour also had wine tasting at a local shop.

Tip:  Every night, our group leader (Alfio) posted an info sheet for the next day.   Take a photo of it for reference and memories.
