Florence

This city was the best of Italy.   It had the magnificent renassaince history, architecture, romantic walkways, art and food, but all without the large crowds of Rome.

Like Rome though, you will walk miles as you explore its secrets and see its splendors.  There are taxis that you can take but you will miss so much of the local experiences if this is your sole method of travel.   We walked the small  alley ways, visited the local shops and tasted the local  cuisine.  This town had it all!

We had tours of the Accademia Gallery , the local piazza, and had two of the best local guides!   To see the statue of David (17 feet high) along with Michelangelo's unfinished prisoner statues, were breathtaking.   To walk along some of the same hallways as these artist and the powerful Medici family was inspiring.

Richard, upon our group leader's suggestion, ate the local street food  sandwich called:   Lampredotto.  Not something most of the group wanted to try since it's main meat source was tripe.... but, he said it was delicious!

Shopping!  Florence was the former fashion capital of Italy and it has the shops to prove it!   All the fashion icons have stores here and Ferragamo has its headquarters (and museum) here.   The region specializes in leather goods and you can shop everywhere!

Make sure you get a chance to stop by the Cathedral.  The duomo, built by the Lorenzo Medici, is inspiring.
